News: Young has been stretched out

Shannon Drayer reports that Young had been pitching in minor-league games for the Nationals, and has been stretched out to 75 pitches.  He is set to start Saturday for the Mariners.

Compass Reading: Rotation set for April

1. Felix Hernandez

2. Erasmo Ramirez

3. James Paxton

4. Roenis Elias

5. Young

News: Young signed to major-league deal

He didn’t get a minor-leage spec contract, which is why they had to drop Bobby LaFromboise from the 40-man roster.

Compass Reading: That leaves four pitching spots to be determined

LaFromboise was cut rather than Hector Noesi, indicating he’s still got a shot at a bullpen spot, or that they want to get a return on him rather than just letting another team grab him.

Anyway, I assume Fernando Rodney, Danny Farquhar and Charlie Furbush are safe, and Brandon Maurer and Stephen Pryor start on the disabled list (along with Hisashi Iwakuma and Taijuan Walker, of course).

That still leaves 10 guys theoretically competing for four bullpen spots (in rough order):

Guys with asterisks require a 40-man roster move.

Wilhelmsen and Medina have experience and are the most likely picks — though there’s been some buzz that the Barkeep might not make it — and then either Beimel or Luetge, but probably not both.  They also seem to like Miner, as he keeps getting mentioned.

Although both Beimel and Miner would need to be added to the 40-man, presumably in each case the guy they beat out (Luetge [in the case of LH Beimel] or Noesi [in the case of RH Miner]) could be DFA’d.

Beavan has an option and can be sent to Tacoma as a backup plan.

If you’ve been following this space, you know we love Smith and Leone above any of them, but now might not be the time.

News: Walker & Iwakuma to rehab at High Desert

Tacoma considered too cold.

Compass Reading: When it happens, don’t pay attention to the stats

High Desert is usually hot, dry and windy, and is at altitude. In other words, pitchers hate it.  But April won’t be so bad.

Walker, by the way, skipped High Desert on his way up the ladder, which leads us to …

News: Victor Sanchez starts for AA Jackson in minor-league game

This is from a few days ago, but it’s a hint that 19-year-old Sanchez will jump from Clinton to Jackson just like Walker did at the same age.

Compass Reading:  Victor’s vector is way up

It’s not just any 19-year-old that you stick at AA.  In fact, I once did a little study and found that virtually every teenager who was placed at AA and survived went on to get Cy Young votes.

Jackson broadcaster Chris Harris reported that Sanchez is “a beast.”

[Also he reports that D.J. Peterson “can flat out rake.”  Deej might skip High Desert as well.]

  1. Any DJ Peterson positive information sure is exciting. He could make things very interesting in terms of the M’s lefty hitting lineup “issue”. It sure would be an awesome problem to have if Smoak actually hits decently this year and Peterson advances like people think he will.

The M’s could actually do something that GOOD teams do – they could trade Smoak or even Seager before they get expensive and plug in equal to (or maybe greater) production from a young kid.

Man, I want the M’s to deliver the same pipeline that the Seahawks deliver with their cornerbacks. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to change the narrative on the M’s young players from “they always under-perform” to “next man up”.

Ah, spring optimism. Can’t wait for the season to start.
