Special Sauce:

  • Burgoon lent his name to the “Goon Squad” bullpen at AA Jackson, featuring Carson Smith, Forrest Snow, Stephen Kohlscheen and others.  At 5-10, Burgoon was the “one of these things is not like the others” member:

  • Well, Wolverines are supposed to be small and fierce (Burgoon a Michigan guy).

Commentary:

Q: Should Burgoon really be ahead of Bawcom?  After all, they’re the same age and Bawcom has already had success in AAA.

A: No.  Not really, except for one thing.  Burgoon nukes right-handed hitters.

Here’s his Spectometer for the last three years, just against RH hitters:

Year Age Lvl HR% BB% XBH + BB% ISO K% PSA+ Conv+ Comp
Age Arc Goal < 1% Goal < 6% Goal < 14% Goal < .100 Goal > 20% Strong prospect > 100
2011 22 “+2” 0.70% 7.75% 11.97% 0.080 26.06% 131 124 155
2012 23 “+2” 2.41% 8.43% 13.86% 0.128 34.94% 142 129 171
2013 24 “+2” 0.00% 10.13% 15.19% 0.066 31.01% 130 137 167

The year with the high HR% and high ISO was in hitter-haven High Desert, where almost everyone suffers from those kind of results.

But it’s clear that something about Burgoon’s approach and stuff (low-90s fastball, tough low-80s slider), coming from the 5-foot-10 frame, befuddles right-handed hitters.  To strike out nearly one in three, while not allowing anything hit hard (except in High Desert) is not something you see every day.

Now, admittedly, relying on minor-league splits without tons of data is risky, but he’s done it three years in a row, so he seems to have something figured out.

Is a ROOGY a thing?  The Internet says yes!  So therefore it must be true.

Gooner for ROOGY!

Considering the flood of impressive RH bullpen guys (Stephen Pryor, Smith, Dominic Leone, Kohlscheen, Logan Bawcom, Snow) Burgoon will need to hang his hat on something.

Extra Innings:

Of course.
