Early March 25-Man Roster Checkpoint

Another in our series on the status of the potential major-league roster.

Since the last one, the main development was the recognition that the shoulder issues with Taijuan Walker were going to require him to be on the disabled list on Opening Day.

Partially as a result, Scott Baker and Randy Wolf are more prominent.

On the position player side, obviously Nelson Cruz is off the board as a possibility, but maybe Robinson Cano‘s lobbying will result in another RH bat of some kind.  In the meantime, Abraham Almonte seems to have a hold on a spot.

As always, the assumption is 12 pitchers.

Here’s the position players, with the “running total” in parentheses.  Non-roster invitees are in green and speculative additions are in red:

Catcher Mike Zunino (1) John Buck (2)
First Base Justin Smoak (3) Logan Morrison (4) Corey Hart (5)
Second Base Robinson Cano (6) Nick Franklin (7) Willie Bloomquist (8)
Shortstop Brad Miller (9) Nick Franklin Willie Bloomquist
Third Base Kyle Seager (10) Nick Franklin Willie Bloomquist
Outfield Michael Saunders (11) Logan Morrison  Endy Chavez
Dustin Ackley (12) Abraham Almonte (13) Stefen Romero
Corey Hart   Cano lobbying RH add?
  Nelson Cruz     Cole Gillespie
       Xavier Avery
DH Logan Morrison Corey Hart Cano lobbying RH add?
  Nelson Cruz

And here’s a look at the pitching situation, which is just getting muddier:

Starters Felix Hernandez (14) Hisashi Iwakuma (DL)
    Taijuan Walker (DL)
  Scott Baker (15) Chris Capuano
Erasmo Ramirez (16) Ervin Santana (seems unlikely, but he’s still out there)
   James Paxton (17)
   ?? (18) Randy Wolf
    Brandon Maurer (or bullpen?)
    Blake Beavan
Closer Fernando Rodney (19) Stephen Pryor (DL)
RH Bullpen Danny Farquhar (20)
  Tom Wilhelmsen (21)
  ?? (22) Yoervis Medina
  ?? (23) Hector Noesi
    Logan Bawcom
Luis Ayala  (doesn’t seem to be under discussion anymore)
    Carson Smith
    Dominic Leone
    Ramon Ramirez
    Logan Kensing
    Mark Rogers
    Matt Palmer
    Zach Miner
   LH Bullpen  Charlie Furbush (24)
   ?? (25) Lucas Luetge
    Bobby LaFromboise
    Joe Beimel
    Nick Hill

Recall that one 40-man roster spot can be created by moving Danny Hultzen to the 60-day DL, but that spot appears almost certain to go to Baker.  A second spot (possibly for Wolf) can be created if Noesi is DFA’d (we believe he is out of options).

Assuming Iwakuma and Walker are out for only a short duration, they might not want to make 40-man roster moves to fill those spots, which might give Noesi, Beavan, Bawcom, Luetge and LaFromboise a better shot at least at the Opening Day roster.
